Children and Hammocks

E-mail Print PDF

Children love hammocks but many parents are hesitant to let them use them because of safety concerns. There is really no reason to worry if proper precautions are taken and a few simple rules observed.

First rule: Buy the right hammock.  The hammock you choose should be sturdy enough to take a beating and of a close weave so tiny arms and legs cannot slip through and get caught. Our polyester net hammock is perfect for children.

Secondly, install the hammock close to the ground and cover the ground underneath with grass, wood chips or some other material that will make for a soft landing if someone falls out.

Thirdly, tie the hammock down so it cannot flip over. Notice the white rope on the corner of the hammock above. To do this, attach a length of rope to the spreader bars on diagonally opposite corners as shown in the diagram below. Attach these ropes to stakes in the ground directly below where they are attached to the spreader bar. Tighten and tie them to control how much the hammock can rock and tie firmly.

Now establish a couple of rules:

   1. No jumping. A hammock is not a trampoline.
   2. Play in the hammock only when there is a responsible adult to supervise.
